Senior Tax Director with Florida Power & Light in Juno Beach, FL, Brian R. Murphy is responsible for tax planning for both federal and state taxes for NextEra Energy, Inc and subsidiaries. Prior to his position he was the tax manager responsible for all of the companies state and local tax planning initiatives. Florida Power & Light is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc., one of the nation’s leading electricity-related services companies. Prior to his positions at FPL, Brian was a Principal Tax Advisor with NextEra Energy Resources where he maintained primary responsibility for all tax issues and planning initiatives related to wind energy operations, acquisitions and development. Before entering the energy and utility industry in 1998, Brian was with Ernst & Young LLP in Orlando, Florida. Brian received his Master of Accounting (Tax Concentration) and his B.S. in Accounting with honors from the University of Florida. Brian is a Certified Public Accountant in Florida and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Council on State Taxation (COST), and the EEI Taxation Committee. Brian speaks regularly to professional groups and is founder and president of STARTUP (State Tax Roundtable for Utilities & Power), an energy industry focus group for state tax professionals.
