Lee Squires
Senior Associate, HOGAN LOVELLS
Lee Squires is a member of Hogan Lovells' international tax practice. He advises on a range of indirect and direct tax issues. He has particular experience on VAT matters, but his practice also includes advising on corporate and finance transactions, tax disputes, group reorganisations, tax structuring and real estate matters. He writes a monthly column for Tax Journal on the latest developments in VAT.

Peter Mason joined CMS Cameron McKenna LLP’s London team in 2004 after a career in the banking and financial sector during which he defended numerous cases before the UK Tribunals, Courts and the ECJ and, in particular, issues relating to optimising indirect taxation. He took the Abbey National case at the ECJ concerning the treatment of general costs in TOGC property transactions, and the Abbey National virtual assignment case.

Frank has recently joined Monckton Chambers but has over ten year’s experience in tax litigation with a particular focus on VAT. He worked in the VAT department of a ‘Big 4’ practice for eight years and was a Senior Manager in their London-based tax litigation department for three of these. Frank has written and lectured extensively on various aspects of VAT. He is a Council Member of the Irish Taxation Institute, Chair of the Institute’s Indirect Tax Committee and editor of ‘VAT & Property’ - the leading text on VAT & Property in Ireland.

Hamish Garnett

Hamish is the head of VAT and IPT for the EMEA Division of MetLife, a leading global provider of insurance, annuities and employee benefit programs, serving 90 million customers. He has also worked for KPMG and PwC and originates from New Zealand where he began his career in the Inland Revenue Department auditing insurance companies. Hamish currently holds the chair of the Association of British Insurers’ Indirect Tax Panel.

Peter studied Modern Languages at Oxford, then moved into the Big 4 in 2001 and trained as a CTA. He has subsequently worked in-house in the City and in Ernst and Young’s Financial Services VAT Practice. He is currently Head of VAT at Bank of New York Mellon. Peter is an Associate and Council Member of the Institute of Indirect Taxation and is a former Chair of the Investment Management Association VAT Committee and the London Investment Banking Association VAT Committee.

Mark Chesham

Mark Chesham has specialised in advising businesses in the financial services and insurance sectors for over 25 years. He started with HM Customs and Excise, working in a specialist insurance team, before spending 15 years in two of the 'Big 4' accounting firms. He set up his own consultancy practice in 2005 and is now Director of Indirect Tax Services at Moore Stephens. He is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute and the VAT Practitioners Group.

Arthur Kerrigan

Arthur Kerrigan is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and works for the European Commission (DG TAXUD), currently heading sector for VAT on international services including electronic commerce and financial services. He also represents the European Commission at the OECD on consumption taxes and is a former vice-chair of the OECD Working Part on consumption taxes. Arthur frequently speaks at conferences on VAT and financial services issues and has also previously published on this topic. Recent publications include “The impact of VAT on financial services and insurances – the law of unintended consequences?” Frontiers in Finance and Economics, December 2007 and “The elusiveness of neutrality – why is it so difficult to apply VAT to financial services?” – International VAT Monitor.

Barbara Farndell

Having begun her working life as a primary school teacher,
Barbara joined Customs as a VAT assurance officer in 1989 initially based at the Reading office. She moved to the London based policy section nine years later and now works as a manager in the HMRC Financial Services policy team with responsibility for insurance and finance VAT exemptions and for Insurance Premium Tax.

Linda Adelson

Linda Adelson was until recently a VAT partner at City law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner. She advises on all aspects of indirect tax, with a particular specialism in relation to VAT on financial services and insurance. Before joining BLP she spent 5 years as Head of VAT for Lloyds Banking Group, as well as time working at Abbey National, Allen & Overy & KPMG. She is a past Chair of the British Bankers' Association VAT Working Party and currently sits on the VAT committees of the Investment Management Association, the Finance & Leasing Association and the Law Society. Linda is presently a Partner at Roseta Tax.
