i am a w2 employee. i work for a construction company. they send me all over the state on jobs that can last for a month up to a year at a time. i might be 500 miles from my home. i have to travel to the site and stay there. i do get a chance to go home every two weeks or so on the weekends.
my question is can i deduct my milage for going to and from the remote location and what kind of records must i keep? And can i deduct my lodging and meal expense while i am away from my home, and how do i do that?

If away from home overnight, then meals and other expenses might be deductible. It's a case of it depends.

Yes you can deduct mileage and lodging (not meals) as long as you maintain a "tax home". You are allowed a deduction for 'duplicated expenses". The jobs must be temporary (lasting less than 12 months)
